sergeant At Arms Tidbits
Sargent at Arms was shortened to accommodate the auction update meeting.
Mary Lou had a rollercoaster week, as her Dad fell doing laundry with a cane, and was in emergency for a 5 hour operation. But the next morning he was up at 6:30 getting eggs at Steves’ farm. The same day Lindsey called to announce her full 7 month fellowship in Cape Cod, one of ten emerging artists, the only poet in the group. Congratulations! Mary Lou is going to New York all expenses paid, for the company and will miss the auction. It was a hard choice.
Debbie T .thanks everyone who came out to the Moms Stop the Harm event at the library last week. She will miss the district conference as she will be at the school trustees conference at the Bayshore.
Judy’s youngest grandson, Jack, has scarlet fever, but is doing fine on antibiotics.
Sam mentions he’s sacrificing his turn at S@A to allow time for the auction update.
Pat sent out a message about the District Conference to the 14 who are attending.

Kal Mahal's reclassification has been postponed many times so I asked ChatGPT to tell us about the origins of the Mahal name and immigration to the Fraser Valley and this is what it wrote.
The name "Mahal" has its roots in India and is commonly used as a surname in various parts of the country. It is believed to have originated from the Sanskrit word "mahallaka," which means a large house or palace.
In the early 20th century, many Punjabi Sikhs from India immigrated to Canada, seeking better economic opportunities. These immigrants were mostly young men who worked in industries such as logging, sawmills, and agriculture. Many of them settled in the Fraser Valley region of British Columbia, which offered fertile land for farming.
In the 1930s and 1940s, a group of Punjabi Sikh immigrants in the Fraser Valley formed a community known as the "Mahal" or the "Mahil" community. The name "Mahal" was derived from the Punjabi word for "village," as the community was made up of individuals from several different villages in Punjab, India.

The community has also made significant contributions to Canadian society, including the establishment of the Komagata Maru Museum in Vancouver, which honors the Punjabi Sikh immigrants who faced hardship and discrimination upon arrival in Canada.

Rotarians should look after their own table(s), advising guests of our organization.
VERY IMPORTANT. There will not be any tablets for bidding provided at the venue.
Please ensure your guests remember to bring their mobile device or offer to share yours.
Note: The Wine Wall has become a raffle, selling tickets at $20 each. Winner wins the entire wall, valued at about $2000.
BIDDING
Guests must register with Givergy and provide a phone number and email address in order to bid.
Before the first bid is accepted, the bidder must enter credit card information.
They will receive a text with a code in order to start bidding.
We suggest you try it out yourself before the Gala!
MAY 4TH INSTRUCTIONS
SILENT AUCTION ITEMS:
Your old number has been replaced with a new number by adding a digit at the beginning to make it a 4-digit lot number. For example, old #3 becomes new #3003. The last 3 digits will be your old number.
A suffix with a colour is added to make it easier to identify in which location the item should be placed.
Make sure item paper description and (original) number is attached to the item.
Bring to Marg who has the master list.
Marg crosses off the master list and provides the new number.
We will place a sticker with the new number and item description on the item.
We will also provide a coloured paper with item # and description, with the colour corresponding to the colour in the number and in the ballroom location.
Bring item to the ballroom for placement in the correct colour section.
Judy and company will arrange the items in an attractive manner.
TABLE LAYOUT AND HOW IT WORKS
(1###)-PINK, (2###)-ORANGE, (3###)-GREEN, (4###)-BLUE, (5###)-YELLOW indicate table sections and (6###)-PURPLE will be the hanging baskets in front of stage.
Each section has a separate colour.
Items will be placed in sections, according to their colour. They may not be in numerical order within those sections, having been organized for esthetic reasons.
The item number indicates the colour, and thus, the location.
GIFT CERTIFICATES
Debbie Samsom is collecting.
Tent cards (with certificate title) will be on tables according to their colour/number, mixed in with other items.
Certificates will be kept securely at the cash desk in labelled envelopes.
Successful bidders must pick up certificates at the cash desk, showing proof of purchase.
Someone will be crossing off the collected certificates from the master list.
EXTRA WINE AT TABLES
Each table will have one red and one white bottle of wine.
Each table will have a ‘Wine Please’ ticket, allowing for pickup of an extra bottle at the bar. The tickets will be given to the Rotarian at the table.
Beyond the allocated bottles, the bar is open for purchase of beer, wine, or other beverages. Cash or machine payments accepted.
CLOSING OF AUCTION 9:45 p.m.
Successful bidders will receive a message from Givergy within 10 minutes of the auction closing time.
They should NOT collect their items at this time.
They must pay for their items on their mobile device and will receive proof of purchase on their mobile device.
When they have proof of purchase, they go to the table(s) where their items are located, show proof of purchase to a volunteer (or to Rotarians who are helping out) and collect their item(s).
If a guest does not wish to pay via credit card, they may go to the cash desk and make payment.
Those guests will receive a receipt which may be used to collect the item(s).
For these payments, the cash desk MUST document the guest’s name, contact email, and phone number, the item # and $ paid to allow reconciliation to outstanding amounts.
Cash payments should be discouraged where possible.
