Our club is joining with other clubs to award a Richmond external Paul Harris award March 4th of 2022. So keep thinking of a deserving recipient.
The Lower Mainland Foundation dinner/event is scheduled for February 5th 2022 – but is now on covid watch.
The next board meeting is January 26th 2022 (yes 2022) now by zoom.

sergeant At Arms Tidbits
Bobby reported that the Banquet Halls were closed once again and that the January 18th reopening may not occur now until mid February. Got an aroma machine to help create a relaxing spa. Learned through a Bobby do list that there is such a thing as unsalted butter. You got out of doing the laundry and cooking while the hall is closed now you have to figure out how to get out of doing the grocery shopping.
Dalbir has had a quiet holiday and hopes to see Bill at the Canucks game. As of publication time NOT!!!!
Peter also had a quiet Christmas but managed to have a prime rib dinner. Grand kids got art supplies and books and were very happy. No need for electronics this Christmas.
Mary Lou has not left the house but had her Dad over for the first time. Nothing like snow, a two year old, and a dog for fun and frolic.
Debbie S. ran a 3k three times yesterday and it was boring. Another Don Dixon story was not boring as Don called a mechanic to get Justine's (sons partner?) car going. Nicole stayed in Whistler with boyfriend and friend and had covid come for Christmas. Friend was supposed to fly home but kept testing positive but will be able to fly home tomorrow. Mom has terminal cancer and all members thoughts are with you and your family.
Kal offered Bobby a different a doobie(spell check with Kal) aroma. Did not hear Bobby say no.
Debbie M. spent Christmas with daughters family including granddaughter.
I had Christmas full of family and the house is pretty noisy with 4 four year olds and two 2 year olds. Mike's girlfriend working all but two days in December organizing vaccination and testing stations for VCH.
Chris M. was recording 20,000 steps on her fit bit but that may drop now that Papa has gone back to France with his big meals, whisky and cigars after he tested negative. Had Japanese for New Years and recommends Louise Penny audio books. Does not care that it was a snow day(like every day) and is staying optimistic.
Dick is following the experiments across the country where some provinces are shutting everything down and others partially open - like us. Oh and it's - 45 on the farm in Saskatchewan.
Garth cancelled Mexico because he wanted to go shovel snow at Whistler where slopes were initially not so busy. However on the Monday there was a two hour line up for Creek Side and another two hour traffic line up just to get to Whistler. A covid convention perhaps? Lucky as no one sick at the office.
Ron also shoveling snow but not at Whistler. Why travel up there when you can shovel snow here. Gets his 8,000 steps in the house. Had a nice birthday and is visiting the restaurants in Steveston.
Gordon said something like "Long may your loins reek" which apparently means something like "there's a fire in the hearth" which sounds more comfortable.
Carolyn had a quiet holiday and used the time to make sure the hummingbirds were fed. Family is back now so quiet time is over. Sadly put the 19 year old cat down out of 18 pets over the years. Had a zoom meeting where 5 of 6 affected by covid. So not if, when?

In other Jaffe news though Kayla is flying home but staying with Bill because the Jake's replacement roommate has covid. Jake is staying in New York working as heaven forbid, a lawyer(we know what they are like.) Brian Kirkham is now a grandfather. Congrats Brian. And after 41 years of study Bill has a degree in Economics and Political Science. Congrats Bill. Sam refuses to take credit. Although did anyone check who wrote the exams?
Sandra reported that Brittany and mate Josh both had covid and Josh had no symptoms and Brittany has no taste or smell back yet. Kyle and Page hosted New Years at Sandra's for 8 and had steak and lobster danced until three AM and the dancing did not bring on Covid.
At Sam's Moose is the only one enjoying the snow. Sam is on line this week and hopefully back in the class room next week. Also baking this week and using the extra room this year to party on. Or at least have his own space when needed.
Amanda had a great Christmas in Vegas and went to the football game where everyone had to prove vaccination and wear a mask. She felt safer at the game than on the street. Had four days off at the beginning of 2022 - a refreshing start.
Debbie T. cooked two turkeys over the holidays one Christmas Eve? and one Christmas Day. Her dogs love the snow including catching snow balls. Back to School District stuff lucky Debbie. Hopefully kids back in the schools at some point. Was boosted Wednesday, I did not get the impression Drew was involved.
Pat's Grandson now has mild covid after her son got over his severe symptoms. Was in Palm Springs and played with a couple who alleged they were friends of Garth? Uh Huh. Getting tested before coming home was a challenge and ended up having to drive to Anaheim to be positively negative. Glad you made it home Pat.

Pat reminded us to apply the four way test to the things we think say or do and that many clubs recite the test at the beginning of each meeting. As a reminder
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
We are encouraged to read the Rotarian as a source for Rotary activities around the world. Rotary' seven areas of focus are:
- Peace and Conflict Prevention / Resolution
- Disease Prevention and Treatment.
- Water and Sanitation.
- Maternal and Child Health.
- Basic Education and Literacy.
- Economic and Community Development.
- Supporting the Environment
Our Club has done a good job of supporting all of these areas. This years Rotary Theme is "Serve to Change Lives."
Next Board Meeting is January 25th now will be by zoom.
February 5th is the Foundation Dinner now shrouded in Covid uncertainty.
March 4th is the external Paul Harris Dinner under the same shroud.
May 20 - 22 is the District Conference
June 4 - 8 RI Conference.
Debbie S. says the Steveston Beer fund raiser still has inventory.
Melinda is zooming the PETS courses to be done by end of January but may try and attend in Hawaii. And wouldn't that be sad. 😥
Sandra provided a full report.
Carolyn reported that the taxes were done with many thanks to ex member Kathy Moir. We have about $29,000 in the Foundation account and $58,000 in the operating account. Invoices coming out shortly and if you haven't please e-transfer your Sgt at Arms donation. $104.
Deb M confirmed the covid uncertainty about the Foundation dinner and external Paul Harris. If the Foundation dinner goes ahead we would buy a table of 8. Also still asking for external Paul Harris nominations.
Gordon summarized our ongoing or completed international projects and grants including the Philippines water project, the Story Walk project and recent contact with the teachers with the education project in Kenya.
Sam reported that the Interact exchange is getting organized with Peru. Tylor Choi our outbound exchange student is filling out the application forms. Sam will be looking for hosts and members to participate with our exchange student in activities.
Peter is still hoping to go ahead live with the auction. Wants to get Givergy up and running this month. Encourages all of us to look for silent auction items.
Marg had nothing but good things to say, including speakers and S at A all booked until March.
Bill reminded everyone to get their Criminal Record checks or make sure you have it. You can find out on Club runner on your personal Rotary tab. Ron Davis is still the contact if you do not have your criminal record check.
Our peace endeavor representatives are currently peaceful.
Gordon reported that the district finances are in good shape and recently audited.
Meanderings
So the sun actually sets the earliest in the evening on December 11th at 4:15:56. On December 22nd it sets at 4:18:50 and rises at 8:03:49 . The sun then keeps rising and setting later and later until January 2nd when it finally starts rising earlier at 8:05:37 and sets at 4:27:43. In Vancouver, British Columbia, the first day of January is 08 hours, 20 minutes long. The last day of the month is 09 hours, 26 minutes, so the length of the days gets 1 hour, 05 minutes longer in January 2022. The first day of December is 08 hours, 33 minutes long. The last day of the month is 08 hours, 19 minutes, so the length of the days gets 13 minutes shorter in December 2021. If you are interested here is the link to the web site. December 23rd has about 10 seconds more of daylight then December 22nd.
The Economist year end edition had essays on different topics. One of the topics was about a history project where a professor at the University of Sussex invited individuals from any walk of life to write to him about daily personal experiences and things seen and heard in daily life. "The more ordinary people think they are, the more interesting their experience to us." It is called the Mass Observation Project and the purpose is to record individual bits of history for future study by historians and others. If you are interested in reading more about it you can just follow this link Mass Observation Project The reason I included this item is this quote from the article written in 1981.
"I think it is undesirable for Europe to become a major power alongside America and Russia. Two idiots are sufficient." It could have been written today. Just make it three and add China.
