The external Paul Harris Dinner is now scheduled for June 15th and tickets will be $75 each.

The Hanging Basket Sale will be going on line again from March 8th to 26th. Pick up will be on April 30th at the Banquet Centre. Lunch provided for volunteers.

The Foundation Dinner is tentatively scheduled for April 16th and it appears we have enough members interested in attending that the Club would buy a table.

Coldest night of the year walk had about 9 walkers and raised $1,275. But no walkers from the male gender. Ladies only this time.

This afternoon there is a Paul Harris Foundation meeting.

Dean presented a Polio Plus Society certificate to Michael Ghirra. Thankyou Michael. Sadly eight Polio plus workers were killed in Afghanistan last week.

Mary Lou thought it was wonderful to walk at the coldest night of the year and enjoy live and in person the other walkers. Appies and drinks afterwards felt very normal. A la Judy, Mary Lou has ongoing birthday plans and celebrations and hopes to extend them for a month. Judy was an elementary school teacher after all and clearly has not lost her touch.

Debbie M. busy at work, paddling, and with granddaughter. She has caught the flu and said bye early.

Debbie T. thanked the coldest night walkers and corrected that there was one man walking.(not dead man walking). Our club had the largest Rotary Club presence at the walk. Has a board meeting on zoom coming up. Proposing a Wet your lips Wednesday for a club get together. Didn't we have a Thirsty Thursday for a while? What's on tap? 🍺

Melinda is back from Hawaii and adjusting to time difference. Loved PETS and new president is fabulous. Helicopter crashed in Hawaii and the pilot who died had once travelled with son Heath. He had the possibility of being in that helicopter as he had applied for that job. Grateful he is on the ground. It was wonderful to have grand children in Hawaii but the holiday started after they left. She celebrated her 35^th wedding anniversary in Hawaii.

Elena was at airport waiting for sister for 3 hours because sister was one of the random tests. Helping organize virtual concert for candidate running in the Philippines who is the only woman running for president.

Belinda enjoyed the coldest night of the year walk. Reminded us that International Woman’s day is March 8th. Attending a mindful gardening workshop featuring how to gain balance through mind and soil.

Sandra had a wonderful time in Hawaii after the last two times were cancelled. Brother in law tested positive so he stayed behind. While there they did nothing but walk around and snorkel. Sister and brother in law kept testing every day as soon as he tested negative they came to Hawaii. Hard to watch Olympics in the US because of the media focus. Sandra's Mom’s family is Ukrainian and grandfather left and still have family there so a lot of concern.

Susan thankful for coldest night of the year. Finally went to Roberts Creek on sunshine coast with family for three birthdays and a Christmas celebration. Noon club fundraising event on March 16^th. The Arts Council has a Seniors project she is working on where the seniors record their stories and their portrait is painted and displayed with sound bytes of their stories.

Chris M. still loving retirement doing 20,000 steps a day. Tried to meet up at Garry Point with the coldest night team but only met up at the end. The post walk was really fun.

Amanda super happy to be here she had shots on Thursday and took three days to get over the side effects. Very excited of being invited next September to do hair at New York Fashion Week.

Sam played hockey last night and did stuff for flower baskets and the web sites shall be up soon. Find five bunnies will receive a package of peeps. I seldom understand what some is talking about.

Judy had a busy week and spent Thursday with three children watching videos from the 1980s. Judy looked stylish wearing large glasses. The Christmas photos were taken when Ralph was younger then their kids are now. Conner is the spitting image of his father Spencer and also celebrated Warren’s birthday.

Kal congratulated Amanda and Dick for making it live and in person. Had a training session at the banquet Hall with Bob PEE for a good hour and a half. Bobby not impressed as it was not a scheduled nor sanctioned event.

Peters back yard is a birds paradise as Jane keeps the bird feeders fully stocked. However, this has attracted the attention of a coopers hawk. You know it is watching when the little birds disappear. The hawk after waiting patiently swoops down and grabs one of the little birds. The cycle of life. Except Simba nor Nala ever ate Poomba.

Marg had a great week as sister who has been staying with them, and whom Don invited to stay as long as she liked was looking to buy a place, sister has now bought at Admirals walk. Marg to prove she is sophisticated was not going to a hockey game Thursday night but the Ballet!!! Well, la de da! 🕺🏼

Bob has a property in Kamloops that has sat empty for two years but is now leased out to the indigenous band from Lytton on a ten year lease. They apparently have enough money to buy Luigi’s Restaurant where Bob went for dinner.

Dalbir last Friday went to Prime West Farms run by Bruce May. Impressed by how it operates like a company and it was voted Canada’s number one foreign - worker employer of the year.

Michael won the Netflix award. Daughter is graduating and for that he bought her a 760$ grad dress(about what my first year of University Cost in 1970). Family day at Whistler saw a lot of Americans but was not able to meet up with Bobby(must be a big condo). Back to Netflix and watching Inventing Anna about European girl scammer. Boy talk about a spoiler alert. No need to watch it now.

Dick will tell us about the last two years and the last meeting he attended live and in person was at the casino. He feels like he has aged 10 years because of eye sight and does not have depth perception. Has been keeping busy watching Yellow Stone and nearing the end of it. Barb was into figure skating. Dick has been stuck at home and zoom has been a god send to keep in touch. Covid, heat bomb, flood, and now Putin and is amazed about what goes on.

Carolyn sorry for the polio workers. Had a busy February with grand kids with birthday parties and all got colds. Very glad February is over as it is the longest month of the year. Treasurer says the dues are due on Sunday and half of club has not paid, so please pay dues and the sergeant at arms. Carolyn would like to get everything done before the auction and flower sale, and before she gets nasty. 😡

Garth was also at Whistler and thought he would refinish chairs but wisely left most of it to the professionals. Went on a helicopter tour 30 years ago and the pilots were ex Viet Nam vets who would fly straight at a sharp peak and get within a few feet of cliff and ride the up draft to the top. Upchuck and updraft have the same etymology.

I am taking my sister to Victoria for her grand daughters birthday. Experienced helicopter uplift. Recommend Crashing into you on Netflix. Korean rom-com set mostly in North Vietnam - Emily in Paris - Se ri in Pyongyang.

Bobby would like the board meeting to be scheduled. Had heard complaints that his clothes are all grey and blue so family is taking him clothes shopping - may spend more than Michael's daughter's grad dress. Starting the garden up this year. Kal gave him a large tire for cross fit - from Kal tire. Booking hall for a 60th Richmond High school reunion for 78 year olds. Apparently 5 years ago there were a 100 and now expecting 60.

Dean always fun to get out of bed(he said insincerely) with three breakfasts clubs in the district he does get up early. Dean's goal it to get clubs working together with ads in Richmond News. Now working on Paul Harris in June. If the clubs work together there will be a Bigger impact on the community. Steveston club still has another batches of their beer if you are interested. Richmond club fundraiser celebrating the year of the tiger on March 26^th at Continental Restaurant with Asian dancers and the money raised will go to among others Pathways and Richmond Hospital.

Bill said that Sam has a brother, whom he claimed was named Jake, and this Jake had double hernia surgery. No one would make that up so we all hope Jake recovers uneventfully. Bill thought Dick was old some 25 years or so ago now Bill has reached that age he has decided to join some of the snow birds in Florida next week for some shuffleboard.

Pat did listen to a Foundation event that raised some $200,000. Tea and Crumpets again but gave tickets to cousin as Pat is off to Palm Springs. Played bridge at Jericho with friends. Ukraine donations will be talked about at the Board meeting with shelter box, red cross, and Ukrainian humanitarian appeal being considered.

Tickets:

Capacity 350 – get your tickets early – see Sandra
Table sponsorship $2,000 per table of 10 – see Sandra – your name will go into a reverse draw for timing at the buffet line. We will still auction the first but then have the reverse draw with only the table sponsors entered.
Let Sandra know if you want a table. Money should go to Carolyn via etransfer.
No paper tickets -just a list kept by Sandra. Do we need virtual tickets? Or a receipt?
Individual tickets are $150 each.

Online Silent Auction:

Givergy site working – Chris M. and Eleanore – you can browse the site without entering your credit card. Your card will be needed only when you wish to bid. You can start entering your items – contact Chris or Eleanore if you need assistance. Deadline to enter items April 8^th bidding to start on April 27^th

Meanderings

So we all know how big space is - possibly infinite if not close to it. Our solar system seems pretty compact, which it is, compared to space. However even the whole of our solar system fills less than a trillionth of the available space in our solar system. All those diagrams you have seen of the solar system are not drawn even close to scale. According the the best seller "A Short History of Nearly Everything," Neptune isn't just a little beyond Jupiter, it is five times farther from Jupiter that Jupiter is from us. He says:

"Such are the distances, in fact, that it isn't possible, in any practical way terms, to draw the solar system to scale. Even if you added lots of fold out pages to your text books or used a really long sheet of poster paper, you wouldn't come close. On a diagram of the solar system to scale, with Earth reduced to the diameter of a pea, Jupiter would be over a thousand feet away and Pluto would be a mile and a half distant (and about the size of a bacterium, so you wouldn't be able to see it anyway). On the same scale our nearest star, Proxima Centauri, would be almost ten thousand miles away. Even if you shrank down everything so that Jupiter was as small as the period at the end of this sentence, and Pluto was no bigger than a molecule, Pluto would still be over thirty five feet away."

It's too bad any country especially the Ukraine has to be right next to Putin's Russia.

Kiss The Mirror

A middle school for girls was faced with a unique problem. A number of girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirrors leaving dozens of little lip prints. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called several of the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the custodian. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every day. To demonstrate how much work they were making for the custodian, she asked him to clean one of the mirrors while the girls watched. The custodian took a long-handled brush, dipped it into the nearest toilet, and proceeded to scrub the mirror. From that day on, the problem of lip prints on the mirrors was completely eliminated.
