Last weeks meeting
The speaker was our very own PDG Gordon Dalglish. Gord spoke about Polio and reminded us that Oct 24th is World Polio day. He began his excellent presentation with a historic photo showing a room full of "Iron Lungs" (see Meanderings). Gord gave a brief history of the polio eradication effort that started in 1979, as well as providing current statistics. Much progress has been made but the job is not finished. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is a public-private partnership including Rotary International, the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
