Last weeks meeting
President Larry presented a $5K cheque to Jan Hawkins representing "BC & Alberta Guidedogs".
Chris M introduced our speaker, Al Liao representing the WEqual Foundation. He told us that Badminton is the fastest racquet sport in the world with shuttlecocks reaching over 400 km/hr! WEqual is a non-profit foundation located in Richmond, BC.
(From the website) The foundation was initially started to fulfill the community’s need to have a place – a community – for badminton enthusiasts to play, learn, improve, socialize, and grow in a safe, positive and caring environment that would cultivate responsible, productive, proactive and benevolent community citizens.
Al described the process they use to provide Badminton opportunities in local schools. Susan thanked and presented the "coveted" Richmond Sunrise Rotary pen.

- Did you know?.... A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made (1905) by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization, Movement and Service work in action."

Committee Updates
(REPEAT) From Elena, Chair Rotary Friendship Exchange D5040:
- 12 members from six different district 5040 clubs will travel to District 3810 Manila, Philippines from Jan 28 to Feb 17, 2019. Clubs represented are Vancouver Arbutus, Vancouver Fraserview, Burnaby Deer Lake, Ladner, Squamish and Richmond Sunrise. Elena, Joyce, Kathy (and Don) are going from our club. District 3810 has 113 Rotary clubs and 4100 members. In 2019 they celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Asia. Philippines was the first Asian country to embrace Rotary, the Polio campaign was started there, and RWH actively sends them containers.
We look forward to hearing about this Rotary Friendship Exchange trip upon their return....
