Our visit from District Governor John Berry (Pat) has been rescheduled from the

3rd of November to the ^{17th of}November. It will be followed by a meeting of the Board with John.

The Club AGM is November 24^th and there will be no nominations from any member who is on the floor. Send nominations to Bob.

A big thanks to Bob, Joyce, and Sandra for hosting this years progressive dinner. And everybody who brought other stuff - see Judy's email.

Peter has once again organized the Poinsettia Sale - see Peter's email. Poinsettia sales have reached $4,300 and Sunday November 20^th TODAY is the last day for orders.

The Progressive Dinner raised $3,200. If you haven’t paid or donated your $100 please do so by etransfer or otherwise to Bobby.

November 20^th is the Christmas luncheon at noon at the low, low cost of $20 pay. Poinsettia pick up at 10 PM. It is all happening at the Palace.

Nov13th – 26^th is a clothing drive by the Rotoract Club. The clothes will be donated to Covenant House. You can arrange a pick up by emailing them at connect@regalrotaract.com.

Inherit your rights Gender Training Project is ahead of schedule is has added an additional training session.

Larry is recovering nicely, and the Drs. are positive about the results and prognosis.

Max had a good long weekend on Mayne Island.

sergeant At Arms Tidbits

Judy had time with grandkids and watched nine hockey games. Both teams won bronze.

Chris B was with her daughter who treated Chris to an all inclusive besort in Rarbados. She swam lengths three times in the hot tub sized pool. The daughter swam in a wet suit. The hurricane filled up the hot tub with sand and the staff had to dig out the sand with shovels. Chris looked like she might still have some of that sand in various crevices. 🏊

Kal spent Tuesday squeezed tightly into an MRI and is seeing a specialist Friday. Both, a result of cancellations.

Bill said that MRI can accommodate a patient up to 450 lbs. Bill sadly had a friend who saw a Dr. three weeks ago for back ache that turned out to be lung cancer. The friend just passed away.

Sam was happy to be here. I mean there. I mean last Thursday at the Palace. We were happy he was here too or there?

Peter was diagnosed with bowel cancer 8 years ago and the most recent checkup showed that everything is fine.

Garth had several Remembrance Day concerts. At Whistler the cable for Creek Side is somewhere but not where it should be. Hopefully it will open by Christmas. Otherwise, a real first world problem – he would have to go into the village to ski.

Mary Lou enjoyed the Chor Leone concert and had a nice family dinner on the weekend. Today is Oscar to the Round House to see the train. Also, off for an east side cultural crawl.

Dalbir’s 88-year-old uncle passed away. Also, it is a wedding week for a cousin on his moms side. The entire hall was full of cousins for the pre wedding party.

Debbie T saw Jesus Christ Superstar presented by Broadway across Canada that was really good. She also had the inaugural board meeting where she was elected chair of the board. Congrats – I think?

Bobby is back from England for his father-in-law's funeral who passed 9 days short of a hundred. His siblings had all passed in their 90s. He is looking forward to the World Cup.

Micheal's kid are under the weather. In Surrey there is a decoration show room that is busy with clients. He will miss next week. So long MG. See ya.🙋🏼‍♂️

Marg was skipped (as in chopped liver) but the S at A returned to her to hear that she saw Chor Leone and also went to the cenotaph for Remembrance Day. Her Father was the only one of his squadron that came back and he used to play last post on Remembrance Day. An emotional memory.

Max was on Mayne Island with Chris P.who sent me photos that I cannot open on my laptop. but they are good photos of Max and other on Maynel Island.

Sandra celebrated Brittany’s birthday and then off to Whistler.

Pat is having computer problems so off to geek squad (not Whistler nor Palm Springs). Tea and crumpets but no hockey games because grandson is quite ill. Granddaughter’s team qualified for the grade 9 provincials. Thanks to Debbie M. for breakfast.

Elena was busy this week packing donations for the village children in the Philippines.

Jeannette’s son drove her to the meeting this morning and has been super nice because he wants to use the car. 🚗

Danny went to the Vancouver Convention Centre to see the National Geographic King Tut exhibit. Tut was the youngest Pharaoh of Egypt at age 9 but he died 10 years later. The exhibit demonstrates the mummification process which was well described by Danny. When the time comes Danny will be able to help you mummify your pet when the time comes.

Peachy was not able to attend last week as she was very busy, but we were happy to see her back this week.

Susan after all the zoom meetings she attended now has to figure out what time to leave home to be at the meeting on time. This weekend is the Arts Council Islamic art experience at the library.

I now know my role in our move coming up at the end of the month. I volunteered to be the Laborer as opposed to the organizer.

Gordon thanked our guest Nancy who helped Gordon a lot with the district conference.

Melinda also saw Jesus Christ superstar. Also celebrated one of John’s daughter’s birthdays and saw his other daughter for first time in three years.

Debbie M. had two exhausting babysitting days. Granddaughter had her first date with Jax? Miles now has two on call excavator operators - Willow and Oscar.

Meanderings

There were 4.8 million African Slaves shipped to Brazil. That is about 10 times the number shipped to North America. 1.1 million of them live in villages called Quilombos that were settled by escaped slaves starting in the mid 16th century. According to National Geographic nearly 56% of Brazilians say they are of African descent. However, black Brazilians on average make less than half of whites and whites fill the majority of leadership positions. There is also a Black Lives Matter movement in Brazil.

SPEAKER

We enjoyed the Induction of Peachy and Jeanette into our Club by our District Governor John Berry.

John Berry has been president of the New Westminster club three times and is now our District Governor.

He attended by zoom but hopes to make it to our club when he is feeling better as he is testing positive for Covid. John had worked with Peter from working in agriculture with the federal government.

John talked about the choices we make in Rotary. There are projects to chose from than we don’t know about let alone understand. The web site shows numerous projects of Rotary available for clubs to participate. Clubs must be realistic about what can be done and be comfortable doing it. He is a club guy in New Westminster and views the club as the basic institution of Rotary. Rotary does need a structure, but the club and members are the heart of Rotary. There are opportunities for volunteers at the district level if you are interested and can follow up with Dean the ADG.

Jennifer Jones is the first female rotary international president and in two years another woman president. Jennifer’s theme for this year is Imagine Rotary. An aboriginal artist was commissioned to do the art work on this years banner. The symbolism starts with the circle of connectivity. The 7 dots is the depression left when people stand up or the seven areas of focus. The green line represents an aboriginal digging stick, and the colours have individual meaning. Jennifer’s priorities are diversity equity and inclusion. She encourages discussion, dialogue and debate about empowering girls and woman. We often think of other countries than our own. As in parts of the world this is a serious issue where women are dying. So even though there has been great progress in our part of the world, there is still more to do.

Rotoract was a youth program and is now in parallel with rotary clubs and are full members of Rotary and involved at international and district levels.

As Rotarians we need to provide all members with meaningful responsibilities especially new members. We should not let new members wait and observe but get them engaged right away. For people to be engaged they need meaningful responsibilities. People want to be engaged if they are in Rotary and will have a passion for any priority. The care and comfort of members involves fellowship and to enjoy what we are doing as an important part of rotary. Alright to think about ourselves and how to make it work for us.

The District strategic planning committee came fourteen page summary. (Which you can read in the attached appendix A. (ha ha just kidding🤣). The Priorities of the strategic plan include the support of the club by asking what they can or cannot do. Also to reduce the administrative load on the clubes.

The Foundation is a priority and our district is already instrumental in making a difference as over $1 million was donated last year. Our clubs are most effective when participating in international and district grants.

Membership development and engagement is critical to the clubs. The clubs should have an active membership committee which may include Rotoracts with ideas.

John wants to improve communication between the District and the clubs which is a challenge.

Another priority is diversity equity and inclusion. Each district now has a committee and a chair. They are looking for concrete ideas but let clubs move at their own pace. Clubs will benefit in terms of membership.

Another priority is the Youth Exchange program and we have 8 students in districts at the moment. It is more feasible if more than one club is involved. Interact carried on through covid and they are back and doing well.

The District Conference is on the web site commercial April 28 – 30 2023 pinnacle in downtown Vancouver. The theme is connecting clubs and communities. He wants everybody to come away from the conference with one idea for their club. There will also be fun and fellowship. There will be entertainment and excellent speakers. You can get a discount if you send in an email to theberrys@shaw.ca. $25 off registration fee. There is a block of rooms at $259 a night at the hotel. Over $400 if you do not get part of the block.
