Our club is joining with other clubs to award a Richmond external Paul Harris award March 4th of 2022. So start thinking of a deserving recipient.

The Lower Mainland Foundation dinner/event will be held on February 5^th 2022 – more details will follow.

The next Board meeting is December 7^th at Sandra's.

The next meeting December 9th is our toy drive so bring your gifts and your Christmas Stories.

Debbie Murphy thanked the Club for making the Poinsettia sale a success with special thanks to Chris P., Sam, Justin, and Peter. The club raised $2,300 for the foundation and $2,355 to the club.

The meeting of December 30th is cancelled.

Jennifer Jones is going to the Olympics. Oh and a different Jennifer Jones is going to be the first female IR President ever. Oh and they are both Canadian.

Kathy Moire is involved with other interests and will not be coming back to the club.

The Richmond food bank is in need of canned meat, rice, pasta. Also any cash donations made will be matched up to $10,000 in the month of December.

sergeant At Arms Tidbits

Mary Lou enjoyed the Poinsettia sale, seeing people in 3D and thanked those responsible. Her day was complete as able to get some of Marg’s pickles. Heading to Stanley Park train later today.

Gord knows everyone wishes they were Scottish and wished everyone a happy St Andrews Day. Flag of Scotland is the oldest flag known in the world 500 AD. Rotary donated $60,000 to the local flooding.

Debbie M. enjoyed the sale and luncheon and commented on the positive response to the Poinsettia sale and we could have sold more. Thanks to Peter and others (thanks to you to Deb!🙏 ) Debbie has a busy week ahead with work and her granddaughter. A first post pandemic visit from Sister in law from Toronto.

Belinda went to Aquarium with grand kids. The experience was as good as ever but hardly anyone there. Concerned that if it does not get busier it will have to close down. Wonderful showing of an excerpt of Polar Express.

Dick said goodbye to November and whatever was growing above his lip. Dick thinks the new mutated virus should be called Macaroni instead Omicron. Then he stuck a feather in his cap and called it Omicroni!

Ron is now slightly ahead of Dick in age again with his latest birthday. According to Pat, Gordon is not the third oldest, but no one is telling. Ron is happy to hear the local tourist venues are opening up. A hearty welcome to the fifth wave! I think he was being sarcastic.

Bill blah. Monday lunch for Dean Crain selection. Meeting with Tyler who is our outgoing exchange student. Jake is going back to New York. Already has a job and will be a pseudo Uncle along with Sam as former exchange student May is pregnant.

Kal spent Sunday morning sending our poinsettia buyers to the Palace and attempted to seduce a new member to our club who may have been a business lady of the night. Lit the menorah, sang and ate a lot of donuts.

Peter watched granddaughter play soccer in the under 11 and beat the boys 6-1. Grandson won his game 1-0.

Jake’s brother was not there Sunday as he(that's Jake's brother aka Sam) was teaching his(aka Jake's brother) brother in law to drive and Jake's brother (aka Sam) had to look after Moose. The interview with Tyler our exchange student went well and he is an excellent candidate for exchange. Jake's brother (aka Sam) had his(Jake's brother) Boss over for dinner and got a raise(Jake's brother got a raise who is aka Sam). Sam also buys two of everything he is donating because he wants to keep one for Jake's brother.

Garth claimed that in Hawaii the temperatures range between 69 – 84(he did not say celsius) and they left open doors at night. Had a nice dinner with Dalbir and Kal. Only needed his nexus card to return and very easy coming back to Canada. Daughter who lives in Abbotsford is doing okay as they live on a hill but roads above them are evacuated over a concern for slides.

Judy enjoyed Sunday could sold more Poonsettias if had them. All grandchildren vaccinated except for under 5. Shopping weekend with Granddaughter and lunch.

Marg claimed even Don liked the Poinsettia, although we did not hear it from him. Ben turned 30 going on 10. Marg has been shamed into removing her gourd display because friends house is entirely decorated for Christmas season.

Sandra had great weekend and celebrated Christmas with whole family for the first time. On Sunday morning there was torrential rain so they went bowling instead of golf and spa. Rock climbing next year, will need some training. Her house is decorated for Christmas.

Melinda's Gourmet Meats did not win an award but Dale Bahd did or was it Dalbir Bahd???? Safety tip do not leave the Poinsettia outside or it will die. Willow went to ballet with hair in a bun. Had dinner and theatre in Langley. They saw Elf and really enjoyed it. Another safety tip "Order turkey early as there will be a shortage."

We had plans to have Christmas at Skaha in 2020 - covid delayed for one year to 2021 and now may be flood delayed. 😭

Bobby attended a party with fresh pizza and four types of pasta. He was driving on 6 road and just missed a person walking all in black. Michael had a birthday planned for daughter at the Banquet Hall but this event was bumped for a client. Hence Michael sulking and not here this morning. Small leak in woman’s washroom created a big mess.

Susan sorry she slept in but was glad to be here at least by zoom. No update on the arm.

Pat had nice social events this week at Steveston Seafood House and went to the Stanley Theatre for Smokey Mountain Christmas. She is kindly hosting ants again this year.

Gordon brought us up to date on our international projects. We have sponsored another Hippo Roller and Story Walk is still in process but moving from Minorou to another site with Marg coordinating.

Or projects have been focused on water this year. Among other reason for clean water Polio is transmitted with unclean water.

We were asked by Rotary Club of Manila San Miquel to help with a water system project just outside of Davao City. The City is on Marlog Mountain, 2,000 feet above sea level with about 200 families and 1,000 people. A water system was built five years ago but a forest fire destroyed the water system. The children had to carry water for 1500 metres so they were missing school and other activities. There were health issues before clean water with a long list of diseases from dirty water. The total cost is 300,000 pesos or about $11,000 Canadian. Our club will donate $500 Canadian for construction supplies. Gordon showed pictures of the village and villagers. They will be doing some of the reconstruction work, lay the pipes and rebuild the water reservoir. The saying is "Water is hope and life". The rebuilding has started. The Club will be honoured with a plaque as a Silver Sponsor.

Meanderings

I am reading the book "The Inconvenient Indian" by Thomas King and learned that Will Rogers was a Cherokee who never in his movies played an Indian. By the mid 1930s he was the highest grossing and highest paid actor in Hollywood. He also performed in the Ziegfield Follies and Cody's Wild West Show. The author describes Rogers as the unofficial voice and conscience of America. Some quotes:

"An onion can make people cry, but there never has been a vegetable invented to make them laugh."

"There's no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you."

"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'nice doggie' until you can find a rock."

The author then writes "He(Rogers) also said, 'We will never have true civilization until we have learned to recognize the rights of others.' This last adage isn't particularly funny, but then Rogers wasn't always funny. Sometimes he was hilarious."

Gordon mentioned St. Andrews day so here is a description;

Saint Andrew's Day, also called the Feast of Saint Andrew or Andermas, is the feast day of Andrew the Apostle. It is celebrated on 30 November. Saint Andrew's Day (Scots: Saunt Andra's Day, Scottish Gaelic: Là Naomh Anndrais) is Scotland's official national day. It has been a national holiday in Romania since 2015. Saint Andrew is the disciple in the New Testament who introduced his brother, the Apostle Peter, to Jesus as the Messiah. Known for his generous and cooperative spirit, St. Andrew remains the patron saint of fishermen, fishmongers, singers and pregnant woman, and is said to offer protection against sore throats and gout.
