Carolyn’s shoulder is healing but she is using it too much, and it hurts at the end of the day. Is usually up from 3:30 – 5:00, then falls back asleep.🥱 So she didn’t make it in person this morning. With the Chamber this week, she toured Ocean Spray which had done 6 weeks of cranberry harvesting, and it was fascinating to see the process.
Susan is having trouble with her computer, so is on her phone. With the Owl, it is fabulous to hear and see everyone (it's a hoot hoot!!! - that still funny)🤣 . She will be zooming for a while now and she can’t shop at Costco as the parking lot has been under pressure. The employees are forced to park at Garden City and Capstan Way and take the shuttle for 20 minutes. Glen is on home care so he can drop her off and pick her up at work, but when he goes back to the island she’ll have to go back to shuttling. She’ll need to shop at Superstore where she can park close to the store. !
Gordon told us that Rotary World Health has been going for 30 years and our club was one of the original sponsors. He remembers the first shipment to Kiev, and he is thinking about the amount of goods that have been shipped since and estimates it has been in the millions of dollars. He encourages us to participate in a loading as it is unbelievable. Kudos to Elena who spends so much time gathering items. He paid a visit to Newman’s with a gift certificate, bought tenderloin steaks and his mouth is still watering. 🥩
Elena was baking yesterday and gave everything away in the neighbourhood and some neighbours sent back other food. It’s nice to do if you have the time. Thanks for the support for this shipment, and she’ll let us know when the loading happens. She is trying to coordinate with Belinda to use any equipment that isn’t being used in hospitals here.
Micheal had parties at the banquet hall this week, so was very busy. His 20-year-old daughter had a medical emergency, having fainted in the bathroom at her mom’s house, just before mom left. The ambulance was called, and Micheal rushed from the hall. At the hospital doctors were saying that it’s common to see teenage girls under stress with life, social media, etc. Is that an explanation? Happy birthday next week!
Jeannette is going to Dubai on Saturday for two weeks, and has been preparing outfits for the hot weather, but found out she has to wear covered outfits, so has changed her wardrobe.
Peachy is busy with clients, and is going to Kamloops today to see a client who needs help with groceries, etc. She will pick up another caregiver and take her to Kamloops to do an assessment. (Ed. note obviously a growing reputation for excellence.)
Pat updated us on her tenant’s friend who was murdered at the rave party, a friend was injured, and he went back to help. The tenant has gone to Israel for the funeral. She is going out for lunch at Ember and has tennis tonight.
Chris M. had a great day yesterday, visiting the fabulous travel agent (Dana) at North South, then to Au Comptoir for a very French lunch, although the lettuce in the salad wasn’t the right kind – details, details! She finished her travel book and uploaded it but was almost late for meditation. The update on Max is that he’s tasting ice cream in Italy!
John says the downside of living in Delta and being connected to Richmond is the often-heard bad tunnel news. He was playing squash at the community centre, and had to go 17A, where the passing lane goes through, but the other lanes get backed up. He is thinking about coming on zoom for rotary meetings – NO! It took over an hour to get to golf last week at UBC. The Owl reminds him of Darcy’s UVic rowing coach who yelled into the loudspeaker and was unintelligible. Thanks to everyone, as Jennifer’s subscribers have increased.
Mary Lou was at Hollyhock and the cabin. Alan’s not driving after his blood clot on the brain, is feeling better but is frustrated as he owns 4 vehicles and can’t drive any of them. Thankfully they live where everything is walkable or close to transit. Oscar’s preschool won’t allow him to come as he has sniffles, so they’re going to Richmond Country Farms today.
Melinda was in the States this weekend, as her sister’s daughter just had twin boys (after being told she couldn’t have children), so Melinda is happy to be a great aunty. She spent time with siblings and grandchildren. All her kids are sick, but they do catch everything! She is going to Australia for 7 weeks, leaving in December, back in February. They are not going business class, so John is pouting. There is a possible cruise next year for New Zealand.
Sandra went to the Ocean Wise Seafood Chowder chow down last Thursday where restaurants submitted different chowders, and they tasted and voted. It was great. She showed the bear Chris M. made for Miller, out of her aunt’s fur coat – Chris’ cat was almost part of the real fur bear, as she kept lying on the pieces.
Margaret is working hard and is going to Seattle for the Sea Hawks game.
Peter had a limited budget when building his house, so they did the insulation themselves. Jane had a kitten, but as they were finishing, they couldn’t find the kitten, then heard meowing in the wall - they had stapled it in! Cats! (Edgar Allan Poe plot if you ask me.) It was a carpal tunnel operation for Jane, after years of pruning. She is on the mend and will soon be back to serving Peter. (Ed. Note I wonder if Jane knows?)
Sam and Justin sleep with a white noise machine because Justin snores, but he got nose clips so is better and they’re trying to sleep without the white noise machine. At 3 a.m. they were hearing water running, so made a fun field trip to the kitchen and saw it was the dishwasher. Next week is Justin’s twin brother’s wedding!
Bill is looking after the photos for Justin’s twin brother’s wedding. He received sad news about a colleague who died of lung cancer. She was only in her early 50s. Sam is the emcee at Justin’s twin brother’s wedding.
Larry is back! He thanked us for the fun socks, as he doesn’t otherwise get to wear anything exciting in his role as funeral director. The teddy bear is cute. He has a $10,000 fur coat but isn’t sure he wants to cut it up yet. He loves Dubai, and has spent lot of time there, with many British people, all engineers, who would come in on contracts. Only the locals were wearing burkas, and the British girls wore bikinis at the beach and were 100% nude at the hotels. (Jeannette worriedly gulped). Larry tried to get up last Thursday to come to Rotary, but after a shower, he was wasted and had to lie down, but we’re happy he is back today! He will find out the results today to see if any more cancer is in the brain, but he is optimistic. The doctor he saw this week has such an amazing personality that one can get well just talking to him. He calls Larry his prize, his very best brain surgery. All the doctors say he’s doing really well. He needs one more surgery as now there is only skin between the graft and his brain, so he will be getting a plate to protect that precious brain. His leg is open from the knee to the hip as they took out skin, muscles and veins from the leg and it hurts! He is doing ok, and so appreciated Judy who kept bringing meals. He was comforted by the messages from everyone.
Bob went to the UBC apple festival on weekend where they had 950 apple varieties( our resident apple expert says there are around 7,000 varieties worldwide.), apple tasting, a $10 entrance, and his 4 favourites included Mutzi and Shamrock. The Sikh religious leaders are now banning outdoor Indian weddings at hotels and destinations. This will be interesting to see how it plays out. Peter Roaf has been trying to organize a zoom meeting and had only 3 out of 17 presidents come. Delta shared their fundraising idea of setting up Canadian flags for Remembrance Day, (put up and take away), which earns them a lot of money. Bob had a call from his tenant on Monday about a leak in the unit and it turns out the upstairs plumber didn’t do a quality job, A video proves it’s the unit upstairs causing the damage, so the insurance will cover it.
