Our club is joining with other clubs to award a Richmond external Paul Harris award March 4th of 2022. So keep thinking of a deserving recipient.

The Lower Mainland Foundation dinner/event is scheduled for February 5^th 2022 – Pat recently forwarded the email indicating it will be going ahead including details. 6 - 11 PM at the Riverside Baquet Hall. However stay posted for updates.

The next board meeting is January 26^th 2022 now by zoom.

The external Paul Harris dinner in Richmond is on Covid watch but still looking for nominations.

Only 50% of members have criminal record checks please get yours.

Visitors

Special member guests Joyce and Chris P. but Oscar has been here so often he is no longer a visitor but a junior member. Anything to bring down our average age and return to gender balance.

sergeant At Arms Tidbits

Amanda has had a quiet time as husband Graham tested positive and she tested negative so back at work. Graham is now okay.

Susan is still on her gradual return to work and her arm is getting stronger. However it is a long road and is not back driving yet.

Elena fell on her walk last Saturday because of the ice. Fortunately the pain has gone. Had a quiet Christmas.

Sam was eating a banana in honour of Chris P.'s attendance this AM. Otherwise Justin has tested positive so the bigger condo allows for an equitable division for isolation but not household chores. Sam is now chief cook and bottle washer. Justin is in good spirits and says he has had worse colds.

Chris P. had a moderna booster. Sister in law tested positive for Covid so hosted an emergency Christmas dinner. Has been missing the meetings because of driving into work but not today. Good to see you Chris.

Marg's literacy program has started again on line. Ben has had his booster and Don is working from teaching grade 6 to being a school administrator. He will do whatever including security, Bob might hire him. This is what retirement looks like for Don.

Melinda has finished her prerequisites for PETS and discovered that the Hawaiian PETS is actually in California. Off to Maui Friday but needed to relearn how to pack as it has been so long since she travelled.

Larry managed to survive the holiday in spite of being on crutches for what turned out to be a broken leg and being crazy busy at work in part because of staff with Covid. Larry's 94 year old Mother was sick with pneumonia and spent 16 hours on the floor before she was discovered. Too tough to die. Larry plans on stealing Steve's wheelchair to help him get around at work.

Kal is watching football every weekend enjoying the games. Wants to see Pughie in her skin tight jersey. Don't change in front of the camera pleeeaszze!

Sandra had a quiet week but some anxiety watching the King Tide and storm hit the dyke between Frances and Williams. Comforted to know our dyke system is in good shape.

Gordon had a nice quiet lunch with grandchildren at Ketch.

Joyce is back from Maui where she felt safe. Also back from Lake Tahoe where the snow was 8 feet deep. Enjoyed home schooling the 4 and 7 year old grand kids. A reminder to please sign up for S at A or inspirational quote. Good to see you again Joyce.

Dick did not know anyone who had Covid for the longest time but now knows six people with it. Noticed that the King Tide brought a lot of logs into the river and the Richmond pumping system rose to 80% of capacity. No flooding here ---- yet.

Ron complained about his girlfriend keeping him in a tight bubble!!! What?😉He is going to Bruno's a new restaurant for the Dine Vancouver event. Everything is going on line in his office but busted the bubble by going into the office and once again for dine out Vancouver.

I got the shivers from my shingles shot(say that fast three times) and not in a good way. A young guy like me is finally getting the booster on Saturday.

Debbie M. said it was nice to see Joyce and Chris P. and it really was as long as Chris kept her shirt on. There are 15 - 19 buyers now vying for every property and some realtors are holding text auctions for cash buyers. The inventory is 25% of normal. She is keeping up with her running even soaking in the rain. No crows in the rain either.

Dalbir is retired and not looking for work but he keeps getting it, what mostly sounds like family in a fight. Getting tested Thursday.

Chris M. is glad she is retired and her job now is fitness and health. Up to 25,000 steps a day which is almost 20k. Has safe social time with friends while walking. I didn't quite catch it but understand she and the dog are doing yoga together. Anyway is definitely getting an air fryer and looking forward to cooking brussel sprouts and all the other suggestions made during the meeting.

Bobby agrees the air fryer is great, had his booster and felt slightly under the weather. Going to Whistler next week after watching football. If you are looking to get tested you can also go to YVR, UBC and Surrey. Do not have to get tested in Richmond.

Mary Lou also fell on black ice and it is more difficult walking on ice with the dog. Has a cough so currently not seeing people. Had Oscar Saturday where he spent an hour in the bath. Now imitating what you say so no more 🤬in front of the grand kid.

Peter was sitting on his boat in Nootka Sound. Felt sorry for renovators. He has been trying to renovate his powder room? that was started last July and the guy just came again this week. Our club has a 50% CRC rate which apparently is the highest in Richmond but not good enough for our incoming exchange student.

Bill ran Wednesday and was soaked within 30 seconds so it didn't matter. Impressed by Chris 25,000 steps as he does 17,000. Noticed that the lines for covid testing are getting shorter.

Garth was shorter then normal because of technical difficulties. He is still relatively tall though.

Pat's grandson has recovered from Covid and is back playing hockey. She had a great dinner out with friends. Did not say if the resident ants were invited.

Bill provided a history of Dean Crain with photos. Dean was married young and had his family young. His mother was showing signs of the disease and Dean by the mid 90s knew she had Huntington's. He bought a lot of life insurance. In 1999 he was diagnosed and he and Bill had become good buds. Chris P. had announced she was going to run a half marathon and the three of them decided to run it together. Dean raised $100,000 for Huntington's research including the run and talks. He was even included in an article in The Oprah Magazine. Dean is Rotary. A picture is worth a thousand words after the half and half marathon.

Mary Lou is our Dean Crain winner who has adapted to the Covid crises in a difficult service industry flying around the province and providing financial and other advice to her clients in difficult times. She has also contributed greatly to our club holding all the Board positions at one time or another and a valuable resource for us all. After saying she was gob smacked and at a loss for words she said the award was totally unexpected. She spoke of how the club has always been there for her and she has learned to have a servant heart.

Meanderings

So have you ever thought about the shape of a Wombat's poop? Me neither but somebody did. According to Scientific American Wombats poo cubes. No not the kind you would put into a glass of whiskey. A road killed Wombat gave up the secret. Apparently the intestinal walls form grooves or corners when contracting, producing the cubic geometry. For you campers out there who can't always find level ground or a shovel, the cubic shape keeps the excrement from rolling down hill. The better to mark your campsite and/or territory. You do not need this feature if you remember to poo on the down hill slope ie. away from your campsite and feet.
