The Board would like to continue with hybrid meetings in the fall with a facility that has zoom sharing capacity. A committee was struck that so far includes Kal, John, Marg and Debbie M. If you are interested please email Pat and let her know. A meeting will be scheduled to discuss the alternatives.
Would the Committee heads please send their list of members to Sandra and any fundraising or projects to Chris M. for inclusion in our transformed web site and to Carolyn for treasurer considerations.

Elena is still looking for someone to join the Board of Directors of the Rotary World Help Network. Also they are looking for new storage space either as rental or purchase in Coquitlam or Port Coquitlam. If you know anyone who has space please let Elena know.
Chris M. has greatly improved our web site so go have a look if you haven't yet.
There will be a Walk for Water and a cheque presentation on September 12th at 1:00 P.M. at Garry Point.

Mary Lou agrees the web site is amazing, so is the expansion of her social calendar which apparently is exploding with family and friends.
Chris M. is keeping busy in retirement and will be able to travel to Salt Spring for the first time in months and will be able to see the farm and Harry. Puppy Moss no longer so puppyish but fortunately can now walk the stairs as getting too big to carry.
Debbie M.s new dragon boat team is stronger and in better shape than her old team so practices lead to achy breaky body from the work out.
Bobby rode his bike to work and put his life on the line by riding the last quarter mile from 6 road to the office. A dangerous stretch for bikes and pedestrians. Going to Whistler with his son and nephew which drew laughter from the assembled multitude - which was compounded by the story of catching 6 - 7 rats per day. Offers of cats and osprey to help with the issue. Banquet hall is busy but cancellations in August because of the no dancing policy.
Sandra reports that Riley and Meghan are safely in Cape Town organizing wedding for next year. And although a year away does not stop aunt from fretting. Brittany and partner's townhouse will be ready next week.
Kal is going to borrow Debbie T's trailer for the trip to Revelstoke which may get their before he does. Ever ride with Kal?
Marg kayaked at Whistler, watches the nightly rat run on her fence taunting her to try and catch them. Ben wants a return to a dinner time where it is just the three of them as Marg's social calendar has exploded as well. Don rides mega kilometres on his new bike.
Judy has no rats but had 4 grandson's stay over after Judy spent two days at Cultus with friends. One of the boys woke up laughing at a dream about a bee bumping into a window while trying to escape. Boys went to visit 93 year old must be great Grandma. Judy driving to Penticton this weekend.
Debbie S. was impressed with the raccoons that visited Pat's during the board meeting although Pat was not. Will now be delivering the beer to members over this weekend(oops not last weekend as previously reported). Raised close to $1,000 and some of the beer will be donated to our summer social. Ron is up for a flight for sure.
Gordon is enjoying the busier Steveston Village as it opens and particularly the outdoor areas give it a European feeling. In favour of loosening the drinking restrictions.
Larry is getting ready for a fun birthday for Steve who will be travelling south to visit friends and family. Larry is getting geared up for his 70th. Pride and proud.
Ron's falling fruit is attracting the rats, hopefully from Marg's house, blueberries are over already. There is enough zucchini for all especially Debbie. Disappointed he was not invited into space.
I suggested everyone get an osprey. Although I always thought they were exclusively fish eaters, one dove and caught something right on the shoreline that looked suspiciously like a mouse or a rat.
Elena saw a friend for the first time in 16 months who took her to the University Women's Club in Shaughnessey with a wealthy group of ladies. She is looking forward to the US opening to be able to visit family.
Dalbir took his granddaughter to the pool at Richmond Golf and Country Club and because he was required to pre book they had the pool to themselves for an hour and a half.
Joyce is back from the US after visiting family and friends and reported that the vaccination issue in California is in your face with 50/50 split between pro and con.
Dick has had to change back to the name which we all remember and love him by because their new concierge is Richard. Welcome back Dick sitting on the deck . Hybrid meetings will allow Dick to continue to attend should his glaucoma eventually restrict his driving.
Melinda is looking forward to Willow and Rory Thursday and is very excited about seeing people again. Deja poop is ending.
Susan for the first time in awhile visited us from her deep state bunker in the Costco parking lot. Reported that son Ryan got to celebrate obtaining his water park certificate only to find he needed to pass another certification. Go for it Ryan.
Debbie T. packed and drove the trailer to Golden Ears Park checking to make sure the hitch was all the way down on the ball about a million times. Took son and girlfriend and enjoyed the water the birds and sons birthday. Drew did not enjoy having to go to the hospital for kidney stones and possible surgery.
Pat has smart raccoons and they know how to avoid the cage traps. Does not appreciate how cute they are as per Debbie S.

We watched a Ted Talk from Louie Schwartzberg that demonstrated aspects of our world that we cannot see by using slow motion or high speed cameras. Also the micro world by using electron microscope photography. We are surrounded by things we cannot see that can be demonstrated by time lapse photography that allows us to see our planet in motion. Between plants, animals and economy the earth is a single organism. High speed cameras are used to slow down what moves too fast to see. A dragon fly has four wings they can move in different directions at the same time. Microscopes allow us to see smaller and smaller from mites and bacteria living on our skin to viruses and individual carbon atoms. Okay so who is this women who went into sort of space with Jeff Bezos. I think she is worth hearing about so here goes.
Mary Wallace "Wally" Funk (born February 1, 1939) is an American aviator, commercial astronaut and Goodwill Ambassador. She was the first female air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, the first female civilian flight instructor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and the first female Federal Aviation Agency inspector, as well as one of the Mercury 13.
Funk became the oldest person to go to space, breaking a 23-year record held by John Glenn, setting this record on Blue Origin's New Shepard spacecraft during its suborbital flight on July 20, 2021. She is the only member of the Mercury 13 group to have travelled to space.
As a child, Funk was captivated by planes. When she was one year old, her parents took her to an airport near where they lived in New Mexico and she got up close to a Douglas DC3, an early airliner. "I go right to the wheel and I try to turn the nut," she says. "Mother said: 'She’s going to fly.'" She became interested in mechanics and built model airplanes and ships. By the time she was seven, she was making planes from balsa wood. By nine, she had her first flying lesson.
Funk was also an accomplished outdoorswoman, spending time riding her bike or her horse, skiing, hunting, and fishing. At age 14, she became an expert marksman, receiving the Distinguished Rifleman's Award. She represented the southwestern United States as Top Female Skier, Slalom and Downhill races in United States competition.
As a high school student, Funk wanted to take courses such as mechanical drawing and auto mechanics, but because she was a girl, she was permitted to take only courses such as home economics. Frustrated, Funk left high school early at the age of 16 and entered Stephen's College. Funk became a member of the "Flying Susies" and rated first in her class of 24 fliers. She graduated in 1958 with her pilot's license and an Associate of Arts degree.
Funk moved on to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education at Oklahoma State University, drawn to OSU primarily by its famous "Flying Aggies" program. While at OSU, Funk earned a large number of aviation certificates and ratings, including her Commercial, Single-engine Land, Multi-engine Land, Single-engine Sea, Instrument, Flight Instructor's, and all Ground Instructor's ratings. Funk was elected as an officer of the "Flying Aggies" and flew for them in the International Collegiate Air Meets. She received the "Outstanding Female Pilot" trophy, the "Flying Aggie Top Pilot" and the "Alfred Alder Memorial Trophy" two years in succession.
In 1964, her work in aviation was recognized when she became the youngest woman in the history of Stephen's College to receive the Alumna Achievement Award.
In February 1961, Funk volunteered for the "Women in Space" Program. Despite being younger than the recruiting age range of 25-40, Funk was invited to take part. Twenty-five women were invited, nineteen enrolled, and thirteen graduated, including Funk, who at 21 was the youngest. On some tests, she scored better than John Glenn. The media dubbed the group the "Mercury 13", a reference to the Mercury 7.
Like the other participants in the program, Funk was put through rigorous physical and mental testing. In one test, volunteers were placed in sensory deprivation tanks. Funk was in the tank, without hallucinating, for 10 hours and 35 minutes, a record. She passed her tests and was qualified to go into space. Her score was the third best in the Mercury 13 program. Despite this, the program was canceled before the women were to undergo their last test.
Funk continued to dream of going to space. When NASA finally began accepting women in the late 1970s, Funk applied three times. Despite her impressive credentials, she was turned down for not having an engineering degree or a background as a test pilot.
On July 1, 2021, Blue Origin announced Funk would fly on the first New Shepard flight with passengers, one of four on the flight, including Jeff Bezos, his brother Mark, and 18-year-old Oliver Daemen from the Netherlands, who became the youngest ever astronaut during the flight of July 20, 2021.] During the successful flight Funk, at age 82, became the oldest person to fly to space, exceeding John Glenn's record at the age of 77 in 1998. The flight qualified her as an FAA commercial astronaut.

So after last weeks speaker it kind of has to be gardening jokes this week - right?
I accused my wife of adding dirt to the garden last week. She denied it. The plot thickens.
Okay this one has the word gardening in it.
Presently, I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles.
Therefore, every day I go down on the street and tell the passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel, what I have done the night before and what I will do tomorrow night. Then I give them pictures of my family, my dog and me gardening and spending time in my pool.
I also listen to their conversations and I tell them I love them.
And it works.
I already have 3 persons following me: 2 police officers and a psychiatrist.
I don't like indoor plants. If something is going to die it should do it outside like the rest of my garden.
