Last weeks meeting
Gordon introduced our speakers Sean Hogan and Bonnie Sutherland. Sean is a PDG for District 5050, and Bonnie is the President of RWH (Rotary World Help). They presented on an Education solution called ARES (African Ruggedized Education System) "Classroom in a box". Sean gave an enthusiastic presentation covering development and implementation of ARES. $5k each from 4 clubs morphed into $129,000 US funding (through various matching grants!).
From the website: ARES is a complete K-12 education system designed to operate in rugged environments. It's affordable, flexible, and contains an enormous range of educational content and administration tools for schools.

- Kathy announced that invoices should be out by the end of August. In the meantime everyone is encouraged to send in "tile money" - $104 to cover SAA donations. This saves our treasurer many hours counting loonies and toonies.
- Marg admitted that 3000 jars of canning does not meet the 4 way test. BUT 1697 does!!
- Garth left a few minutes early as he had a "3 person Client Meeting" at precisely 9:12 AM...
- Debbie T back from a 12 day cruise around Scotland, Ireland etc. Unfortunatley Drew took ill in order to "test" their health Insurance plan (it passed)...
- Amanda told us of Bald-faced hornets in her yard - curious? see below..

Got some comments re increased Font size (16) will be used from now on.. Especially useful for those with "older eyes"...
Did you know? There is an insect called a Bald Faced Hornet. Wikipedia says: Dolichovespula maculata is a eusocial wasp of the cosmopolitan family Vespidae. Its colloquial names include the bald-faced hornet, bald hornet, white-faced hornet, white-tailed hornet, spruce wasp, blackjacket, and bull wasp. This species is a yellowjacket wasp, not a true hornet.

This years summer social has been set for Sunday Sept 8 following the ACTS water walk plus the photo opportunity at our water filling station (corner of Steveston Hwy and Railway). The event will take place at Debbie Samsom's home in Tsawwassen and dinner will be served. Please sign up so we have an idea for catering.
