Chris P. gave us an economy lesson as the Bank of Canada raised rates yesterday. Her days are spent talking people off the cliff. She doesnât understand whatâs happening in the economy as weâre still bustling, the economy is growing and the only way to slow down inflation is to raise rates. Maybe itâs because of the many new immigrants? There are supply issues for housing and goods. Not much movement in the real estate business because some people want to hold on to their low mortgage rates (or canât afford to get in on the high ones?)
Gordon is feeling sorry for the oil companies (as well as for the big banks) and notes that gas will soon hit the $2 mark. Thatâs his moan, so he will feel happy for the rest of the day.
Dalbir wants to know if immigrants from Alberta count (Blair groaned). He thanks the City Council of Vancouver for approving the addition of a a staff recommendation to secondary, honorary name to the street at Canada place, which could also be known as Komagata Maru Place to commemorate the ship carrying Sikh, Muslim and Hindu passengers that arrived in Burrard Inlet on May 23, 1914, and was denied entry to Canada. Bad and good sides to immigration â if none, he wouldnât be here. Dalbirâs car troubles include a blown-out muffler and a leak in the Rolls. When presenting the MacNeil scholarship, he realized some students didnât know why they had been chosen. But the speeches, especially the historian (valedictorian) were great.
Sandra was woken up at 4:30 am by the cat, then slept until 6:18, but made it here on time. She shared her chicken saga - left her frozen chicken on the patio to thaw for dinner, was looking at her birdhouse, remembered to move the chicken out of the sun, washed her hair, came back down, saw the crows at the chicken, which became dismembered and stolen, brought what was left of the chicken into the house, took out the gravel and grass, cooked it for the cat, left it too long on the BBQ, went to bed exhausted and didnât have to make Brian dinner. She should have bought a chicken from Melinda. She noted that there was some jerk who parked his Camaro taking up two spaces in the parking lot here. Hmmm.
Bobâs family wedding starts for 7 days next week at the Fairmont in Whistler, then moves to the Fairmont in Vancouver.
Larry got an MRI and is waiting for leg news. His cancer is back and heâs waiting for surgery in a couple of weeks. (Weâre with you Larry). He had a wonderful time in Palm springs with his sisters, lots planned but they just hung out at the pool. Steve joined and they drove to Vegas, staying at the Cosmopolitan on the 44th floor overlooking the Bellagio. They drove to Salt Lake City for Steveâs momâs surprise birthday with all 21 members, and she almost had a heart attack. They stayed at Steveâs brotherâs 8000 sq. ft. house, with lots of entertainment like candy floss, waffle cones and ice cream every day. Sky diving for Mom was cancelled at the last minute, because even though she was a strong octogenarian, there is some risk of bone breakage. So, they did another up and down thing and all survived. Steve drove the 5000 miles in the car for sightseeing, and they had the best time, not boring at all, so much to see in all those western states. Steve drives with his hands, but at the same time manages his phone and drinks Pepsi â with Larry fake braking with his foot. The Faces of Richmond event was great.
Amanda loves the Tuesday pancake breakfast as it is âhands onâ. Things are going better now as she was unable to sit or lay down for 2.5 weeks, because of a pinched nerve in her neck/back. She is getting better after âneedlingâ, which was the most pain sheâs ever had, feeling her body react then not being able to feel or hear or speak anymore, felt nauseous and thought it had taken a half hour, but it was only 6 minutes. But in the end, she could finally sit down. Tomorrow she is presenting for Cambie school. She is going to Saskatchewan after the presidentâs dinner, for her nephewâs graduation.
Bill says in needling you really seize up! He is going to see Jake next week and celebrating their anniversary. He notes that we were all immigrants, his family coming from the Ukraine area, and Grandma arriving speaking only Russian and Yiddish, coming through New York, she said her name many times, but they called her Lewis, and as Grandma didnât change what they gave her back to her real name, Billâs momâs maiden name is Lewis.
Kal is blessed that his family came in 1908. He thanks Bob, Bill, and Chris B. for being his Uber drivers and hopes he will be back driving soon.
Marg got veggies at a stand, hit the curb, and had a rapidly decreasing tire but drove home with it totally flat. She has a nice new tire now. Both siblings have pancreatic cancer so Marg gets tested for those the cancer genes, and got a call this week, from a lovely man saying the scan is available but sheâll be in England, flying out on Sunday. And Micheal and family will be on the same plane, but sheâs in row 6 and heâs in 63!
Chris B. has a new cohort of EAs, 30 of them. During the interviews, they were all so good, top notch. She has 11 days teaching this summer, plus marking. Her 72-year-old cousin came back for the honeymoon, and they went to very expensive Capilano Suspension bridge. She wonât be at the presidentâs dinner as she will be in California until July 3, teaching July 4. Thanks to Bob for saying she needed to swim, which sheâs been doing every day and the pain has gone away â no needling needed.
Susan says things are going well. Two weeks ago, she went to Van Dusen with mom and her friend, which was amazing. They had lunch, hung out in garden, enjoyed the rhododendrons. Momâs mobility is low as she has been ill. This week, she got to rest, although was booked to see friend who had a 5-hour layover on her way to Terrace, but spent all the time scrambling to get on next flight, and although the flights finally worked out, they didnât have time to get together. After the Faces of Richmond, she was going to get together with Tammy Bellfer for dinner, but her daughter in lawâs father had a heart attack and passed away, so dinner was cancelled. Susan had a restful week but is thinking of all those who are going through difficult times and reminds us to enjoy the moments with our loved ones.

She golfed on Tuesday, but has been in hospital every day for Dad who isnât cooperating with staff, fighting security, assessments, etc. They have finally given him a little medication to calm him down, but heâs mad at Mary Lou as he wants her to take him home, but kidneys are not well enough. Theyâre trying to keep him eating and Sean visited with grandpa then took Mary Lou to Pajoâs . Itâs hard to function with all that going on. She saw friends on Facebook who reached out from Florida, that they were going on an Alaska cruise, so met up with them after 40 years, and although he has dementia, it was lovely. She is leaving for the âBrits around BCâ car rally on June 22.
Debbie T. has been absent as has had a pinched nerve in her neck, and after massage, physio, injections, special meds, it is getting better but she still has tingling up and down her arms. At the grad presentations, one can leave, but she recommends staying. She had her sonâs Tesla last week and loves it and wants to buy one, although Drew says no.
Pat is sorry about everyoneâs pain. She missed the CFUW year-end social, but the board meeting and dinner were excellent. She went to Langley KPU open house, including tours of brewery where they teach students how to make beer, gave samples, saw the horticulture school after walking over the overpass (which is better than before when students had to cross Glover Road, but used to run across the highway). Sheâs off to Palm Springs at the end of the month but will be here for the presidentâs dinner. Gilmore breakfast was fun, and she loved the card for Max.
Chris M. enjoys the contrasts in life having had a busy Monday starting with golf, then the Faces of Richmond event, then the CFUW year-end social. Yesterday she zoomed with an applicant from Somalia, then planted kale. Max has only a few weeks left and is leaving for his B.C tour from June 24 â July 9. Book your time with him before itâs too late!
Peachy connects with family and friends on Facebook, but her account has been hacked and she has lost her more than 4000 followers. They tried to scam her friends. She is trying to recover them as she needs the contacts for business, but the business pages werenât affected. She always reads messages for her birthday but will miss them this time. ICBC wants another discovery.
Micheal is exhausted after his nieceâs wedding, which is quite different from a business wedding. Monday there were 500 people, Tuesday 80 at home, Wednesday 400 for the engagement, Thursday 150, Friday the wedding with 600 people, Saturday 700 people for the reception and Sunday 200 people for the after party. We were exhausted listening to him. But he was well âoutfittedâ and had lots of fun with family from London and Toronto. He wonât be here next week as heâs going to the Harry Styles concert at Wembley Stadium with his daughter. Heâll be on the plane with Marg (but not in the same section).
Blair complained that there are only 3 minutes left for him to share. He told Marg that a rapidly decreasing tire was in fact an â Fân flatâ. When it was Dalbirâs nephewâs baby shower, Blair went golfing with Mason. When back from golfing, people were saying happy birthday (Mason had told everyone thatâs why they were golfing but failed to tell Blair). Sadly, his brother in Toronto has blood cancer, which is a shock as heâs only 63. Economically, Blair was lucky to lock into a good rate, bought a condo, and has made Dalbir very happy.
Bobby was proud of the wedding although there was too much Indian food, so they opted for a prime rib western menu. Thanks to Micheal who has a tailor in India and brought suits which were well fitted. Thanks to Melinda for hosting the Board meeting, great food. He will be presenting at the MacNair grad ceremony. Heâs a little ticked off with Micheal who only just told him he was leaving for England.
Elenaâs sister didnât understand the border guard who was asking if she had any can of peas? Elena attended the loading on Saturday with the Ukraine community and there were lots of beds, machines, wheelchairs, etc. She enjoyed the Gilmore breakfast with Max flipping pancakes. The warehouse needs to get rid of 10 skids of books, and Elena will save them for sending to Philippines. At the end of June there are lots of books available.
Melinda has her Corvette in Canada now, officially. But she didnât drive it to rotary. (not much space in the lot here). John has his Camaro here too. Sheâll need to introduce it to Bobâs Camaro and take photos. Thanks to Sandra, Pat, Marg and Brian for help with the food at the Board meeting. She took Max to the White Caps game, and they went for Chinese food at Dannyâs Wun Tun and he loved it.
