The Foundation Fundraiser this year will be a revival of the Progressive Dinner on Saturday November 5^th. starting at 6:00 PM.

Welcome to soon-to-be new member Jeannette Patacsil, a registered nurse at Richmond Hospital, sponsored by Elena. We invite one of our members to mentor her.

The Club AGM is November 24^th and there will be no nominations from any member who is on the floor.

CLUB BUSINESS

Members were greeted with spooky lighting, ghostly moans & groans and a medley of Hallowe’en hats and apparel. Wizardly hats, giant spiders and treats completed the atmosphere. Yes, the meeting was more than normally scary!!

President Melinda started off by thanking all those involved in setting up or Fireside meeting, on the 26^th. Thanks to Bobby and Michael, we met at the Banquet Hall as Kal had succumbed to COVID and so he and his home were personna non grata! We wish him a speedy recovery. Mary Lou moderated a very pleasant evening – with delicious grub from the Ghirras and some wine from the PE – and lots of information for our newer members.

As of next week, our meetings will be back at the Banquet Hall, across the road from the Grand Ballroom, for the rest of the year.

Bill’s presentation on the Dean Crain Award was postponed from this morning to next week, 3^rd November.

Our visit from District Governor John Berry (Pat) has been rescheduled from the

3rd of November to the ^{17th of}November. It will be followed by a meeting of the Board with John.

Next week there will be a Social Committee meeting following the club meeting.

sergeant At Arms Tidbits

Your Bulletin Editor is still in Hawaii but returning next week. Many thanks to Christine M. who published the bulletin last week and to Gordon who took notes from this weeks meeting. For those of you who frequent Kihei, the 5 Palms is closed permanently as has Sorrento's. Merriman's has taken over the 5 Palms space and will open at some future date. Laine, Ryan and Kai were on our Westjet flight and Laine is pregnant with a girl due in the new year.

Peter is working on a plan for Poinsettias and will let us know the details shortly. His granddaughter was out selling Krispy Crème donuts. How sweet!!

Debbie S. has committed to donate $100 to the Foundation for the first meeting that had no cups used for our morning drinks.

Bobby loved the fireside stories that were related. He had celebrated his 29th Wedding Anniversary by watching a football game.

Michael also celebrated – his 47^th! Had a big party which ended in a boatload of MacDonalds – these Ghirras really know how to party!!

Gord celebrated with a Tartan hat and ginger hair. There’s a long story about this get up!

Pat then proceeded to upstage Gord by producing a bunny from under her magician’s hat.

Sandra continued the Hallowe’en theme by recalling a bonfire in their yard which set their neighbor’s hedge on fire.

Danny recalled a spooky incident after the death of one of his employees in Burnaby; the lights flickered on his dentist chair and a floating ghostly figure of the person was seen to appear. Needless to say, the patient’s toothache magically disappeared!!

Peachy and the Filipino contingent who attended the Fireside, (Peachy, Jeanette, Elena and Danny) really enjoyed hearing the details of our Foundation and all the other aspects of Rotary. They look forward to the next one.

Trivia: “Fireside” is a term developed in the earlier days of Rotary. It was named because of the habit of new club members meeting at someone’s home “around the Fireside” and being educated on all the aspects of being a Rotarian.

There was some hilarity at all the acronyms used in Rotary (PDG, DGE, RIP, PRIP etc etc). For your enlightenment and entertainment, I have attached a guide to the most common ones at the end. (There are even more, I hate to tell you.)

Elena had a tour round Chinatown on her recent visit to San Francisco – she also scared the living daylights out of her neighbour on leaving the house this morning - all dressed up in her stringy hair, and black witch's hat!

Marg joined in the theme by recalling a ghostly visit to a house at the end of her street – they could not solve the shaking house problem…..so they demo’d it eventually!

Debbie T had supplied a lorry-load of hats and other spooky things which we had good fun wearing.

Sandra’s been hiking with friends, followed by a tour of the city. Very disappointed at how the east end is looking – not the image of Vancouver that we would wish to portray.

Bob noted that it likely to get worse.

Debbie S. has a culture shock on her recent run….it RAINED!! She got drenched. Not what we have been used to over the past few months, eh?

Though Melinda has avoided it, John got COVID! Yes, it’s still out there folks!
