AGM November 19th 2020.
Get your nominations in for President, Treasurer and Secretary by October 30th 2020.
The Tsawwassen club is holding a flu shot drive through fund raiser on November 7th 2020 in the parking lot of SDSS at 750 53rd street Delta. Email Tom Smith at tom@tascosales.ca for an appointment. There were 28 spots left for a donation of $35.

Bill advised that there will be no youth exchange this year but that the process to take part in 2021 will start in February. Those who missed out this year will have priority next year. Bill asked that it would be helpful to have a youth on the youth committee - preferably someone under 30! No names were mentioned.

Kal, who was overly enthusiastic thought our provincial election was interesting and wished everyone a great week.
Peter is now on the left leaning board of directors of the Co-operators and hopes to have it lean the other way a bit. Congratulations on the appointment and finally dealing with the "mute spook".
Bill is a basket case and sought help from Amanda.
Mary Lou was back in the office for the first time and enjoyed being there and dressing for the office. Made the excellent point that the on line auction brought us a new set of bidders and donors and that creating the opportunity to donate instead of bid was a good alternative to offer to some.
Judy is back in her routine and reviving dormant teaching skills on hosting pre school for her twin grand children.
Marg had her carpal tunnel surgery covid cancelled so she made Christmas Cake. That would be hard on the wrists.
Ron was not only haunted by the "mute spook" but the men's room ghoul. So who would you choose to be locked in the washroom with for 45 minutes? I would choose a desert island!
Deb M. described how Manuel was sent off by the nurses and staff to celebrate his last chemotherapy. Very moving.
Dick was happy to see Rotarians live and in person at the Banquet Hall and we were very happy to see him. He left when he could see his work was done.
Garth advised that a large law firm downtown had to covid close. Watch Youtube for a Remembrance Day Chor Leoni concert.
Larry has construction ongoing at the life centre and claims that going to the periodontist has been good. Huh?
Sandra had a lovely week in the Okanagan for her daughters 30th including spa, hiking wine tasting and snow. But not necessarily in that order.
Melinda is enjoying Willow and Halloween and invited us to come to their place for trick or treat for big chocolate bars. Donated by John.
Chris P. went to the cabin and experienced tension caused by anti-maskers. Skipping Halloween but got new glasses and new teeth? I can only go by my notes.
Bobby was fighting an eye infection.
Gord has decided to sleep through the American election and not wake up until Wednesday. Hopefully no nightmares.

Debbie T. went to snowy and cold Whistler and will decorate for Halloween.
Dalbir had a tough week as a friend's son tragically died that he had help raise. Plus Mother in Law in hospital. Thoughts go out to you Dalbir.
Joyce had an 18 flight hike.

Pat arrived late saying it was caused by some hot mail she had received!!!! Details please.

We had three of our members speak about how Covid has affected their businesses and the session was recorded and you can link to it here:
Here is a summary of their comments on their challenges and opportunities.
Peter's challenges with nursery are:
a. Disinfectant chemicals degrading equipment and other surfaces.
b. Filling in health questionnaires
c. Big jobs were put on hold so had to hold inventory
d. Temporary immigrant workers had to quarantine for 14 days with full pay and accommodation provided. Difficulty finding Canadian workers.
Opportunities
a. record year as people are landscaping
b. customers paying by visa so no receivables and reduced bad debt
c. drive through pick up keeps office clean
d. going paperless
Ron's challenges with Dorset Realty;
a. difficult to find strata managers
b. difficult to find tenants so working hard to keep tenants.
c. unable to fill commercial sub lease opportunities
d. 90% of revenue and increase costs for laptops and IT upgrades
Opportunities
a. most working from home so do not need as much office space.
b. less paper work and stored paper going on line
c. helping retail tenants obtain federal benefits.
Sandra's challenges at Mothers Choice:
a. Had to close down and open up slowly and carefully.
b. satisfying customers particularly hospitals that there were sufficient emergency stock piles of inventory.
c. had to immediately arrange for people to work from home with an adequate supply of laptops, telephones and rearrangement with service providers and all done in two days.
d. had to work out touchless delivery and reduce employee anxiety.
Opportunities
a. had a new idea for team building a zoom cooking show
b. reduced travel costs
c. national sales meeting by zoom partly to reduce employee anxiety
d. going paperless
e. can have a bilingual employee stationed in Montreal who can now service other markets in Canada when needed.

Meanderings
The word Halloween or Hallowe'en dates to about 1745 and is of Christian origin. The word "Hallowe'en" means "Saints' evening". It comes from a Scottish term for All Hallows' Eve (the evening before All Hallows' Day). In Scots, the word "eve" is even, and this is contracted to e'en or een. Over time, (All) Hallow(s) E(v)en evolved into Hallowe'en. Although the phrase "All Hallows'" is found in Old English "All Hallows' Eve" is itself not seen until 1556.
Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which comes from the Old Irish for 'summer's end'."

Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Fireworks Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in the United Kingdom. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London; and months later, the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.
Daylight Saving Time (DST) is used to save energy and make better use of daylight. It was first used in 1908 in Thunder Bay, Canada. DST makes for longer evenings.
The Canadian government introduced daylight saving time in 1918 as a measure for increasing production during the First World War. Similar legislation had been passed in Germany and Britain.
The US introduce daylight saving in 1942.
