Last weeks meeting
Our speaker last week was Sarah Schreier of the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society. Sarah provided a great presentation on the society's initiatives started in 1997 by Richmond's own Rick Hansen. Sarah also left Harrison Hot Springs at 4:30 in the morning to speak to us. We learned about the fact that the white sturgeon in the Fraser are the last in the world still wild. No fish hatcheries, but preserving the species by working with the stakeholders including Indigenous communties, sports fisherman, local, provincial, and federal departments. They can live up to 200 years and only spawn every ten years. The community is now estimated to be about $30,000 fish, but there are more than 60,000 tags out there. The research samples are amazing, and their statistics some of the most robust in the world. Who knew? www.frasersturgeon. com

Happy 48th Wedding Anniversary to Judy and Ralph. The celebrations continues. Bob and Karin are off to Sparkling Hills for their 23rd wedding anniversary. Carolyn announced her second grandchild is expected in the coming months. Brian, Avery, and Marc are back. Brian wondered why no one has been at the Richmond Country Club for the past four weeks. Sam and Bill enjoyed the last few days of the PNE with a food coma. Carolyn was celebrating not being back at school, Judy was lamenting for a nanosecond she wasn't back at school, and Chris M is glad to be back, but incredibly busy. Mary Lou won't be writing the bulletin next week, off to Cortes Island instead. She is also celebrating twenty years of Rotary this month. Thanks to Georgina for sponsoring. Bill is back playing hockey and will miss the Rotary BBQ and Walk for Water initiative. Dalbir reminded us all of the suffering in the Bahamas for Hurricane Dorian. Marg, we miss you. We are sure you are watcbing Bianca and tennis wherever you are.

Thanks to Dick for the bulletin instructions. My apologies if there is any fake news in this week's bulletin. The notes I made on Thursday managed to fly out of my purse when we were driving in the Kootenays and is on the road somewhere between Kaslo and Nelson. I had to rely on my memory. However, I plan to stick to Garth's rule: those that complain about the bulletin, will then write the bulletin.

This is our annual Club Foundation fundraiser back by popular demand. The entry fee is $20.00 and a bottle of wine valued at 20 (or more if you like!). These become the spoils for the winners. Bring your money and wine to the Rotary meeting on Sept 12th. There are only 60 spots (and you can buy more than one spot) so contact Debbie S right away if you want to participate. You must give her your money and your wine by Sept 12th. The daily elimination draws will begin on Monday, Sept 19th . Once you’re in, you’re in. No withdrawing unless you have someone to take your spot!
