Last weeks meeting
Repeat from last week:
Although not a repeat from last week it bears repeating.
Let's all keep each other safe by following the protocols below when attending our morning meetings:
1. Use hand sanitizer upon entering and exiting the meeting
2. Maximum of 3 people per table
3. Maintain physical distancing of 2 meters at all times (including when at the buffet)
4. No singing of O'Canada
5. No passing around of sign up sheets, cards, etc
6. No money will be accepted during Sergeant at Arms
(The Board strongly encourages members to annually e-transfer a minimum of $102/Rotarian to cover S@A contributions for the year)
President Debbie also advised that if you wish to contact a board member or if someone you know wants to join they can go to our web site and click on any of the names of the executive and send them an email. Good to know.

Sergeant At Arms Tidbits
Chris M was in Bamfield (joined via ZOOM) where she goes to feed the eagles whom have come over from France because they missed her.
Amanda was in Cognito (also joined via ZOOM) which might be in Italy.
Caroline thanked 16 Rotarians for using the E transfer process for their “toonies” from the "loonies".
Joyce pointed out that there are lots of local places to go – where? “just around the corner” – maybe that is where Cognito is? Okay so it is off Commercial Drive.
Ron quipped that membership in Rotary is better than a Costco membership and less crowded.
Congratulations to Melinda on the new grandchild (fun days ahead)!l Baby girl 8lbs 7 ounces - not throwing that one back. No name at the time of publication. Melinda has quickly changed her nail polish to pink.
Sandra brought greetings and an update from Marg. She said Marg is home, is looking good and of course we look forward to seeing her at Rotary very soon
Pat reported that she had watered her lawn yesterday that is obviously what brought our rain storm this morning.
spARKER
Speaker was our own Susan, introduced by Ron.
Susan is a communications and marketing specialist. She spoke about membership culture. We all know that she works at Costco and we know that because she often attends our meeting via zoom from the Costco parking lot. Her talk was how membership is influenced by engagement and/or commitment. Membership has its privileges and most people “take out” a membership because of an advantage that they see coming their way. People join shopping clubs to minimize purchasing risks. On the prairies co-ops were able to fulfill some of that purchasing risk and lots of people joined a Co-op for that very reason. Pat thanked Susan for her excellent and interesting presentation.
Pat told us that (thanks to auto correct) she had been asked to thank the “sparker”, and she says that as it turned out Susan was our “sparker”!!!
Meanderings
The Zebra Tailed Lizard extends it ankles and runs on it's toes so it can travel 50 body lengths a second. The T-Rex on the other hand was likely quite slow moving because it's weight would have broken it's leg bones. Even though a horse at 44 mph, can run faster than our President, Debbie can out run a horse because she can run for 4 hours or more. The horse would poop out long before four hours. In probably more ways than one!
On the topic of inspiration during epidemics, Newton avoided the plague of 1666 in London by living in the English countryside developing his ideas on optics, gravity and calculus. Galileo's work that lead to his imprisonment was published during the great plague of 1630 - 1633 partly because the censors in Rome could not review his work as travel was restricted so he had the work published in Florence.

Committee (and other) Updates
Fees for the Riverside Banquet Hall include a continental breakfast of pastry, yogurt, fruit juice, tea and coffee and AV equipment for zoom-in members for a total of $471.25/meeting (including taxes and gratuity). The members will be charged $13 per person for breakfast.

TODAYS CHUCKLE
A man in a hot air balloon realised he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below.
He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."
The woman below replied, "You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You are between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude."
"You must be an engineer," said the balloonist.
"I am," replied the woman. "How did you know?"
"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help so far."
The woman below responded, "You must be in management."
"I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"
"Well," said the woman, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems.
The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it's my fault!"
