AGM November 19th 2020.
Get your nominations in for President, Treasurer and Secretary by October 30th 2020.
The Tsawwassen club is holding a flu shot drive through fund raiser on November 7th 2020 in the parking lot of SDSS at 750 53rd street Delta. Email Tom Smith at tom@tascosales.ca for an appointment. There were 28 spots left for a donation of $35.
The on - line auction appears to have raised a net $9,000 and direct donations a net $2,235. Total then 11,235. This will not be the final total because some purchasers will have paid the 3.25% processing fee and direct donations were still coming in. Tune in next week for the next exciting on line campaign episode featured in next weeks bulletin. next next next week!

As none of our members had any happy dollars nor did any of you forward me any Sergeant at Arms tidbits as politely requested, I will fill in this section with my activities.
Sandy and I went to the Arts Club BMO theatre on West 1st with 18 other masked and sanitized patrons. And um, we really enjoyed the play "No Child." And um, We also were up in the Okanagan and visited our daughter in Kelowna and the school that has been closed there is their children's day care/pre school. So 14 days of quarantine. Um we took my sister Carol to Season's Restaurant for her 70th birthday. There was a wedding in the large banquet room there where it did not look like social distancing or masks were being worn. Another out break? Also how is it a restaurant can use their banquet room and the Ghirra's cannot. Um, does not make sense to me.
Um, I handed in my assignment this week for my history class at Kwantlen. My first mid term is next week. Um my wife is singing the song she used to sing during exams at university. Altogether now:
Oh sing a song of flunk a dub
The biggest flunk you ever dubbed
Laugh and sing and waste a way
Tomorrow will be a flunking day
So study hard and take long breaks
The time goes by faster when you take long breaks
And then on exam day wait and see
You will be a flunky just like me.

Gaby is an award winning film maker and photographer from the New Westminster Club and our district polio chair. He is also a polio survivor. Polio Plus gave him the opportunity to actively support the initiative to eliminate polio. He showed us photos of the End Polio Walk Rotary fundraiser where Rotoracts had volunteered to help raise $8 - 9,000. Tripled with the Bill Gates Foundation the amount for the cause was $27,000. Gaby focused on Ethiopia showing us photos of children who had undergone the same surgery he had in the 1960's. He explained that the surgery eliminated the twisting of the feet from the disease so the patient could wear a brace and walk instead of being restricted to a wheelchair or to crawling. There were 350,000 cases in 1988 when the Polio Plus program started and now there are 52 cases in Afghanistan and 77 in Pakistan. In 2015 Africa was declared polio free. He wanted to photograph the last children who would be diagnosed with polio and need crutches or wheel chairs. The children and their families would often be shunned in their villages but they would find friendship and enjoyment with each other. Rotary has the ability to not only deal with the disease but the negative attitudes. Gaby told us of how moved he was from his experience of sleeping in the same room as Mother Theresa. He explained the surgery further in that the bones are straightened during surgery and then casted for months. He also explained about a program training mothers to care for their children with polio and other diseases. This was helping to empower the woman in a paternalistic culture. They were all motivated to have their children vaccinated.
Meanderings
Poliovirus is composed of an RNA genome and a protein capsid. The genome is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA genome that is about 7500 nucleotides long.(for comparison the Sars CoV 2 that leads to Covid 19 is 29,811) poliovirus is widely regarded as the simplest significant virus.
Poliovirus was first isolated in 1909 by Karl Landsteiner and Erwin Popper. The structure of the virus was first elucidated in 1958 using x-ray diffraction by a team at Birkbeck College led by Rosalind Franklin, showing the polio virus to have icosahedral(20 sided)symmetry. Poliovirus is structurally similar to other human enteroviruses (coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and rhinoviruses), which also use immunoglobulin-like molecules to recognize and enter host cells. The first effective polio vaccine was developed in 1952 by Jonas Salk and a team at the University of Pittsburgh that included Julius Younger, Byron Bennett, L. James Lewis, and Lorraine Friedman, which required years of subsequent testing. The widespread application of the Salk vaccine (introduced in 1955) and the Sabin oral vaccine (introduced in 1962) eventually brought polio under control in the early 1970s.
I am sure those of my generation all have personal experiences with polio. One of our neighbours was in an iron lung in the late 1950's and I remember visiting him in his room and seeing his head sticking out of this big iron box. I played hockey with his son and he was actually transported to the Burnaby Winter Club to watch a game while in the iron lung. It would have been quite a transport. My father as a Rotarian was very much involved in the Polio Plus campaign when it started in the 1980s.
